James Marsters put on an entertaining and fun question and answer session at Wizard World in Philadelphia. Me and Paladin attended the Q and A and had a blast. Marsters was full of energy and answered questions thoughtfully and humorously. He seems like a great guy who truly appreciates his many fans. Marsters shot to fame as the bad boy vampire Spike, on the hit television series Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Then he appeared on Smallville as the evil super computer known as Brianiac. His human form was that of Marsters and he had a lot of fun starting out first as one of Clark Kent’s college professors named Mliton Fine. Marsters was also on the insanely popular Doctor Who spinoff called Torchwood.
Most of the questions were about Buffy although one person asked about Smallville, my personal favorite series. Marsters revealed it was better to play the bad guy, the Buffy rape scene was his least favorite day as an actor, and also he seemed to love the idea that Torchwood breaks boundaries in what science fiction can represent and had no problem whatsoever with his gay scenes. Open and honest, Marsters was a lot of fun and though I didn’t ask a question personally (it can be a bit intimidating), I’m glad I got to see him live and I’ll always be a fan of his. He did reveal that there won’t be a Spike movie/spinoff (too old). I’m hoping he’ll return to Smallville in its final season…….everyone knows you can’t kill the brain-interactive construct.
