Stan Winston, the special effects/make up artist guru, passed away yesterday from cancer at the age of 62. Here’s more info about his life and his battle with cancer. Personally for me, I’ve thought he created the coolest, most convincing creatures that has been seen on the silver screen. He was the man that made the Predators come to life. He also worked with James Cameron(Titanic, True Lies) on Aliens and the bad ass Terminator franchise.
What made him unique from from other special effects crew is that he made them so convincing. He rarely used CGI(involved in creating the dinos in Jurassic Park using models and blending it with CGI) and relied on makeup/costumes to create the characters.
My favorite Stan Winston moment is from T2, when the T-800 is getting shot up by the SWAT. I could see the T-800 breaking down, especially the face and I never knew they used a life size animatronic for it(until watching the extras on DVD). Watching it on the screen, you’d have thought it was really Arnold that was getting messed up. He was probably one of the main reasons why I got interested in movies. As a kid and even now, his work has always amazed me.
We’ll miss you Stan! Thanks for everything you’ve contributed to the film cinema and convincing the viewers that monsters do exist!

I remember when I saw Alien Versus Predator, I wondered “Why does the predator look so crappy?” When I found out later that Stan had nothing to do with that dreck, it made perfect sense. He made monsters seem real.
