DC PICK OF THE WEEK!
WONDER WOMAN #10
Azzarello gives us another fantastic issue and a very interesting look into the messed up family from Olympus.
THE GOOD
What makes this DC issue the best this week is the insight into the personalities of the Gods and their relationships. In other mediums like TV shows, video games and movies, the gods have always been shown as beings beyond our comprehension. But this story really brings them down to our level while still showing off their awesome powers.
Wonder Woman in this issue was very clever and her conversation at the last few panels with Hades shows that she’s a strong female character. But also one that’s capable of great compassion and love. Also the conversation between Hephestus and Hades illustrates just how messed up the gods are and how much they really hate each other.
But the flip side of this is now that Wonder Woman is a part of this family. She might be the one to bring them all together after being separated for centuries. It has already started with Diana making Strife and Hephestus her allies. I honestly believe Azzarello can pull a complicating story.
THE BAD
Hades was going to marry Diana… His half niece…. Well I guess this shouldn’t be surprising since Zeus did marry his own sister Hera. But some readers might be a little disturbed by this, especially since Hades has the body of an 8 year old!
FINAL VERDICT
If you are a fan of Wonder Woman, greek mythology or just a reader looking for a new series to pick up, you NEED to get on this series. Azzarello has the perfect voice for Diana and what he’s doing with the character is fantastic. I hope he continues to write this character for a long time.
MARVEL PICK OF THE WEEK!
AVENGERS VS X-MEN INFINITE #6
While the main event has gone completely into BS territory, this digital comic book is something truly special and even people who are dead set against digital comics need to check this one out now!
THE GOOD
This is what I’ve wanted from an X-Men book for so long now. We finally have a deep psychological look into Cyclops a character, who in my opinion has been slowly becoming Magneto. A mutant who fights only for his kind no matter the price he must pay or the people he might hurt to achieve his goals, but this issue puts us in Scot’s head.
We see him deal with his new Phoenix powers. His new telepathy that nearly drives him insane and forces him to retreat to the moon. There he finds the place where his first love Jean Grey was killed and he resurrects her using the dust from the moon’s surface. This was a fantastic way to bring this character back without feeling forced or contrived.
Jean gives us a deep look into how the Pheonix Force works and the key to keeping hold over it. This was an incredible and emotional issue. Jeans final words to Cyclops hit him and me personally. It also brings back Cyclops to his old self and proved at least to me that he is still the Cyclops who’s willing to defend mutants but not go to the dark side so to speak.
The art is just wow. This is some of the best art I’ve seen in the industry by far, Jean Grey looks beautiful and not hyper-sexualized (like many other heroines in comics). All the small details on the character just ooze with quality.
THE BAD
Nothing!
FINAL VERDICT
BUY THIS NOW! This is the perfect issue for an any comic book, it had character development, continuity without feeling confusing for new readers and one of the most shocking lines I’ve ever read in a comic.
INDIE PICK OF THE WEEK!
STAR WARS: DARTH VADER AND THE GHOST PRISON #2
The coup against the newly formed Empire continues and our protagonist Tohm teams up with Vader to try to save the Palpatine, good times.
THE GOOD
For a nerd like me, just seeing the new Empire be under siege and Darth Vader kicking ass and taking names was enough. But the rest of you should know while this is an action driven story, it finds the perfect blend of action and the quieter moments. Both Vader and Tohm have their own stand out scenes in this issue and neither are over/under used. This gives both characters a chance to shine and makes them both relevant to the plot. Also seeing Palpatine weakened and dying like that was oddly disturbing, I mean I still hate the guys guts for murdering all the Jedi’s, but seeing him as pure force of evil down on his knees like that was amazing. It was great to see that Palpatine still likes Vader. Unlike later down the road where he continuously tries to get rid of him. The art is like a painting, every panel is so beautiful I found myself just scanning every bit of the issue and I almost never do that, but this was just so beautiful I got sucked back into the Star Wars universe by the end of it.
THE BAD
I can’t say anything bad or Vader will Force Choke me.
FINAL VERDICT
Even if you aren’t a huge Star Wars fan, I still recommend that you guys check this out, it’s a fantastic indie comic and it might broaden your horizons past the big two and you can always count on Dark Horse to deliver excellent comics.
THE WEEKS WORST!
AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #8
Why does Marvel hate Spider-Man?
THE GOOD
……………………………….. The covers nice…………… kinda………………
THE BAD
Okay this issue had a good start, mere hours after beating Doc Ock, Spider-Man and the Avengers went to the bottom of the ocean to look for Sable. Then we skipped to Spidey dealing with the whole after math. Now this sounds cool until the writer just say screw it and makes a BS story 6 panels in about a princess that needs to marry Doom. Oh and Sable is alive AND now she’s with Doctor Strange.
Spidey makes no mention of Sable being alive, he just shows up in the limo. She’s there and there’s no touching reunion or anything. Instead the whole mourning story is tossed out the window and now has a pointless story about a princess and Doom.
And Sables death, hahahah. I mean its Marvel so I knew they’d just magically bring her back eventually but she was only dead for A WEEK! Even by Marvels standards that is unacceptable. Especially after AVX INFINITE #6 found a way to bring back Jean Grey for a short time and make it work on so many levels.
This whole epilogue goes against the very character of Spider-Man, a character who is about making choices and dealing with their consequences. If Marvel just keeps magically fixing all the stuff without the character himself actually getting involved, then whats the point of even killing anyone? This makes comic book deaths all the more pointless.
FINAL VERDICT
You guys might think I hate Spider-Man. I really don’t, in fact he’s one of my favorite comic book characters but Marvel is on a mission to destroy him as much as humanly possible with these atrocious stories. I’m going to keep reading this book because at least I know I wont have to deal with this kind of garbage until the next event, but ASM, just forget it.
STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS ISSUE! THE PSYCHO COMMANDS IT!
