Summer movies are slowing down and this weekend is the best example for that. Major releases this weekend includes The Last Exorcism, Takers and Avatar with more footage.
The Last Exorcism is getting the best reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, at 69%. The Eli Roth produced movie deals with a troubled priest who takes on an exorcism as his last duty. Globe and Mail describes it as “A creepy, smartly written and very entertaining low-budget chiller.”
Takers is another movie with wide release but this one is getting bad reviews at 28%. Takers seems like a new take on the action drama Heat, dealing with bank robbers and cops. Only this one seems more action packed and maybe less character development. Movies.com writes: “A slick thriller comprised of equal parts pretty actors, urban crime drama clichés, and cheesy lines… The Italian Heat Job for Dummies.”
Another movie released today is Neil Marshall’s Centurion. I’ve enjoyed several of his films including Dog Soldiers and Descent. Doomsday was trash but Centurion seems like it could be fun. It’s scoring with an okay 56% at Rotten Tomatoes. Centurion is about a group of Roman soldiers fighting behind enemy lines after they get decimated. Hollywood reporter liked the movie: “Unpretentious swords-and-sandals film crafts a tight survival drama out of Roman Empire lore.” while Killer Movie Reviews thought otherwise: “mixes a thoroughly honorable high-mindedness with frequent and jarring examples of torture porn”
20th Century Fox and James Cameron can’t help but try to make more money for the biggest movie of all time, Avatar. Avatar is being rereleased today with 8 minutes of additional footage. It wasn’t screened for the critics so there’s no reviews. But in a couple of months, Avatar will be rereleased on home video with a total of 17 minutes additional scenes so I’d wait. For me watching it last year on Imax and once on Blu Ray was enough.
