Weekend Movie Review Roundup: Trains and UFO Edition

unstoppable Weekend Movie Review Roundup: Trains and UFO Edition

We’re in the second week of November and I totally forgot that Denzel Washington’s new movie is released today.  Another UFO movie is released, while Harrison Ford is in a rom-com.  Let’s see if any of them are worth watching.

Denzel is working with director Tony Scott again for another train movie, Unstoppable.  It’s about a runaway train carrying hazadous materials that needs to be stopped before it crashes into a city.  The movie also stars Chris Pine (Star Trek), and I thought this was coming out in December.  I’m a big Tony Scott fan so I’ll be watching it this weekend.  The movie is getting great reviews and currently sits at 86% at Rottentomatoes.  Detroit News describes it as “There’s a gut-level simplicity to “Unstoppable” that works despite all its clichés.”  It’s probably like “Speed” but with new twists.  I can dig it.

From the directors of Aliens Vs. Predator: Reqiuem comes Skyline.  It’s a low budget version of Independence Day.  This movie looked decent based on the previews but it’s getting really bad reviews.  It’s scoring 17%, so definitely a rental for me.  New York Daily News hated the movie, “It’s finally here: The most boring alien-invasion movie ever.”

Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers) stars in  the rom-com, Morning Glory.  McAdams plays a tv producer who can’t find love until she finds a new job in a low rating show.  Indiana Jones also stars in it as a hotshot anchor.  I was surprised this was produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost).  It’s getting mediocre reviews and getting 54%.  Chicago Sun-Times thought it could’ve been better, “Has moments of sparkle, but the screenplay disappoints and the luminous Rachel McAdams overdoes it.”

There you have it for your weekend movies.  I’ll be watching another Denzel movie while renting Skyline.  If you have a date, Morning Glory might be decent.  See you at the movies!
