Due to Thanksgiving, movies are being released today instead of the usual Fridays’. Four big releases came out today, ranging from a Disney family flick to a violent revenge tale and everything else in between. Let’s check their scores.
Disney’s new CG movie, Tangled, is getting phenomenal reviews. It’s at 89% on Rottentomatoes. The movie is based on the fairytale “Rapunzel.” The marketing strategy shifted for this movie after Princess And The Frog flopped. Instead of focusing on Rapunzel, the ads have shown Flynn Rider, the male lead. Disney also added more action scenes for Flynn. Globe and Mail noticed the change in the formula but welcomed it “Tangled, Disney’s 50th animated feature, is a splendid tribute to the best moments from decades past but also a thrilling example of what could be the future of animated family entertainment from the studio.” I’m surprised this got a really high rating, it looked mediocre based on the previews. I’ll check this out over the weekend.
Next up is Faster, starring the Rock aka Dwayne Johnson. I thought this movie was going to get good reviews but critics are hating it. It’s getting a low score of 43%. Based on the trailers, it looked like a fun ride and the director lets you know right away it’s a revenge flick. But I guess the director didn’t really know whether to make the movie serious or kick ass. In the end you get a mash-up of both and it doesn’t work. Box Office Magazine described it as “Watching Driver peel rubber proves B grade action movies are a welcome diversion in the era of CGI blockbusters. If only Faster didn’t fizzle each time Johnson put down his gun.” I’ll Netflix this.
Burlesque is aimed towards the female audience and it’s getting worse reviews than Faster. It’s scoring a measly 31%. Never heard about this movie until I saw Christina Aguilera perform last week on Jay Leno. She stars in the movie as an aspiring entertainer in a burlesque club. Along the way she finds friends, haters and a mentor. Sounds like Showgirls to me without the nudity. Globe and Mail states “Falling in the pillowy cleavage between mildly awful and slightly entertaining, Burlesque is a clichéd rags-to-diva story that culminates in a series of Christina Aguilera videos.” Definitely a skip, I already have Showgirls on Blu-ray!
Love and Other Drugs is a romantic flick starring Jaking Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. It’s also getting low ratings with 42%. The backdrop of the story is the pharmaceutical world. The previews looked interesting enough but it’s too cliche’d. Detroit News described the movie “Jake Gyllenhaal is great in Love & Other Drugs. So is Anne Hathaway. Too bad the movie’s a mess.” This one is getting Netflix’d.
So there you have it folks, the big movies for Thanksgiving. I’ll be watching Tangled and see what the fuss is all about. The rest can cait. Happy Turkey Day and be safe on Black Friday!
