Manhattan Beach drew more than 80,000 people over the weekend to watch the Charlie Saikley 6 man volleyball tournament. The tournament first began in 1960 by Charlie Saikley, one of the founders of beach volleyball. Throughout the years, the tournament became known as the “Wimbledon of volleyball” and drew professional athletes as well as regular players just wanting to have a good time. Today, more than 100 teams enter the tournament and the majority of them have themes consisting of pop culture. Saturday was the busiest day as all teams played while Sunday had less people because most teams were eliminated.
Let’s take a look at the interesting teams:
These guys were representing seniors and chanted “AARP.” They were singing the theme song from Golden Girls. Notice the walkers some players are using? It’s all in the details!
This team didn’t go fishing early as they made it to Sunday and was one of the better teams. The words on there back was also pretty creative….
Yeah! This was a “natural” team but the word NERD and the green color caught my attention. They won several games. No plastic here!
Tiger Woods’ girls. At first I didn’t get it until I looked at the picture on the poster….
They even had tails….hahaha
“Whatcha gunna do when Hulkamanina and my 24″ pythons run wild on you?” These WWF Superstars brought ropes which only caused them disadvantage as they couldn’t dive for the ball. But for these folks, it’s the detail that counts!
These Star Trek babes weren’t fooling around as they also made it to Sunday. Based on the pic below, they prefer the old school version over J.J. Abrams’.
Flintstones team had both a male and female team. I think the female team was better…love the big ass ties though!
“It’s all right, ‘cos I’m Saved by the Bell”
I haven’t seen so many Lt. Jim Dangles in my life, what a sight to see!
How could you not love Team Pac Man?? The girl in the shirt even has Pac Man going for the cherry!
Team Sweden consisted of Viking hats and blonde wigs. They had a lot of supporters throughout the whole day.
WFTW = Winning for the win. This guy played his role to a “T” even hitting on our photographer. Haha
This was my favorite costume, old school flight attendants. Didn’t know funkadelic colors could go so well!
“Stay thirsty my friends” – The Most Interesting Man In The World
I don’t think these guys played but they were dressed up as beer pongs!
Clippers gets 3 pics because they’re my favorite team. I love the sarcasm on these guys, they knew they weren’t going to win anything.
Olowokandi jumping higher than before and probably scoring the only point for the team.
These girls can cook and play volleyball? NIIICE!
She was the only one dressed up as a DC Superhero…big props!
80’s style Laker girls
Team Texas aka Team Brokeback, they made sure everybody knew they were wearing tight shorts.
Didn’t see these girls played but they couldn’t have been that bad, right?
NBA celebs were also on hand and some even played:
Clipper Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan
Luke Walton playing for Las Palmas Trim Lords
Richard Jefferson also playing
The Machine! Sasha Vujacic
Jordan Farmar ready to play.

Never thought I’d have so much fun at a volleyball tournament but the atmosphere was great. The people were friendly and the players really lived up to their uniforms. It was more of a festival than a tournament!
