I downloaded the demo, not expecting much from it since the other UFC games sucked balls. But, to my surprise, this one is different. This game is very responsive, which is very important in all fighting games. The combinations are easy to throw, from punches to the kicks. However, the grappling aspect of the game is a little bit stiff, but one can get used to it with enough playing time.
The 2 characters that came with the demo are Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Chuck Liddell. Both fighters have their distinct strengths and weaknesses. Liddell’s strength is obviously his punches, while Rua’s strong points are his kicks and grappling. One can play the game in 4 different difficulty levels. At the hardest, Shogun is almost impossible to beat. He takes my old ass down, gets the full mount, and beats my face to a bloody pulp until I get KOd. On the other hand, I can beat Liddell easily with Shogun. I just keep using my Thai clinch, and throw tons of knees into Liddell’s kidneys until his stamina goes down. Once tired, I can then knock him out.
As for entertainment value, this game is fun! I’ve put in probably about 4 hours into this game, and that’s with only 2 characters. There will be tons of characters once the actual game comes out on May 18th. There are so much to learn, especially in the grappling game. One has to learn to time the counters properly or as the commentator would say, “IT IS ALL OOOVERRR!!!!”
Update: I played this game for another 2 hours last night, and found a way to defend Shogun’s ground game. I used to button smash my way out of the submission attempts, but it’s more about timing. When on the ground, do not rotate the stick constantly, rotate it whenever you feel that it’s time to move for a better position, a slight circle tap should do the trick. Now, I haven’t been able to submit Shogun with this technique, but it helps me escape his grappling moves, and get the KO for the win.
