anderson silva ufc 82 UFC 90 Recap

The event looked weak on card but it was pretty eventful: one upset and entertaining matches.  Here we go:

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote – For the well deserved hype Anderson Silva has received, he didn’t look too impressive against the major underdog, Patrick Cote.  Sure, he showed off his dazzling moves but he didn’t follow up his attacks.  Maybe he didn’t train hard for the fight or he was afraid of Cote’s KO power.  The fight ended when Cote re injured his leg on the third round.  Pretty disapointing main event

Josh Koscheck vs. Thiago Alves – Wow, I thought this was going to be boring and both men came out to fight.  Koscheck definitely changed his style and was willing to engage against the dangerous striker, Alves.  Koscheck’s risks didn’t pay off as he got wobbled by Alves in the first and third round.  Great fight.  Alves is the real deal and should be getting a title shot against GSP in the near future.

Rich Clementi vs. Gray Maynard – Boring ass fight with Maynard laying and praying the whole time.  Rich Clementi didn’t do shit either standing up so I blame both fighters for the dud.  Best part was the post fight interview with Maynard getting boo’d.  It was so loud he lost track of his answers.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Junior Dos Santos – Oh snaps!  This was the upset of the night.  Wedrum was a major force in the heavyweight division and he got knocked out by the newcomer, Dos Santos.  Dos Santos looked comfortable standing up, if he works on his ground game, we might see a great addition to the heavyweight division.

Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin – Wow, 2 wrestlers trading shots.  This was another great fight.  Both fighters were going for the knockout and the pace was intense from beginning to end.  I was surprised how great both fighters looked with their strikes.  Sherk and Griffin were just hardcore wrestlers back in the day and their fight showed how much MMA has evolved.

They also showed the prelim match between Drew McFedries and Thales Leites.  Okay fight, McFedries should really work on the ground if he wants to be a serious MMA fighter.

UFC 90 was a good event.  Even though the main event could have been better, the other fights made up for it:

Grade: B
