From the producer of The Lord of the Rings (and the producer of the film Hackers), comes a curious production starring Dong-Gun Jang (Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War), Geoffrey Rush and Kate Bosworth. A little bit ninja and a little bit western, The Warrior’s Way synthesizes two popular cultural genres into one action-packed, yet seemingly nonsensical English language, feature-length film. The Warrior’s Way opens December 3rd.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for martial arts movies that don’t call for subtitles and I give Asian actors a lot of credit for doing an entire movie in a difficult language like English. I’m just trying to figure out where and how Kate Bosworth made it into a film like this. I guess I’m still feeling the sting from her version of Lois Lane so it’s a little difficult for me to picture her in a martial arts film.
I also keep thinking about that old saying about bringing a knife to a gunfight. As the story goes, assassin “Yang” wants to quit the biz because he is being ordered to take out a little baby. But you know, like many gangs, the only way to get out is to die out so he runs off to the wild west to go into hiding. Once there, he grows a flower garden, teaches Kate Bosworth how to knife-fight, and makes a bunch of cowboy friends. When the “ninjas” come looking for him (why they’re being called ninjas when they’re wearing Chinese hats is another head-scratcher) a big battle ensues. At least that’s the story I’m getting from the trailer.

Here’s some additional info about the movie. It used to be called Laundry Warrior. The writer/director Sngmoo Lee was a professor at the New York Film School. Filming actually wrapped in 2007 and has been in post-production all this time!
Although I am opposed to the senseless slaughter of multitudes of ninja, I might try to see this in the theater as it does look like it’s got some good fight scenes and the cinematography is pretty awesome as well. I’ll just chalk it up to mindless fun and leave it at that.
