Happy 420 everyone, I though it would be fun to list some of my favorite stoner movies of all time. What makes a good stoner movie? First of all, there has to be pot. Then there needs be some sort of story, and above all it’s got to be funny while high. The finale and most important rule can be a deal breaker when judging a stoner movie. For instance Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle; funny movie. Watching Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle high; surprisingly not that funny.
Here are some honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut: Grandma’s Boy, Knocked Up, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Super High Me, and Super Troopers.
5.)FRIDAY
The film is a story about 2 friends hanging out on front porch blowing smoke in the wind on one of the most unusual Fridays. Friday also featured the beloved performance by Chris Tucker as Smokey before he sold his soul to the Rush Hour movies. Written by ICE CUBE and friend DJ Pooh, Friday also features comedic legends like John Witherspoon and the late great Bernie Mac. The success of the movie sparked 2 sequels that had some hilarious moment but lacked the heart behind the first one.
Favorite Line: “No aint got no sugar? Damn! Y’all ain’t never got two things that match. Either y’all got Kool-aid, no sugar. Peanut butter, no jelly. Ham, no burger. Daaamn.” – Smokey
4.)CHEECH & CHONG: Up In Smoke
Up in Smoke was Cheech & Chong’s first full length movie together, the duo had been writing comedy for 10 years prior. It remains a landmark in pot cinema and is the basis on which all others are judged on. Cheech & Chong play two stoners who met by chance and in haze of confusion get wrapped up in the scheme of driving a van entirely made out of marijuana across the border.
Favorite Lines:
Pedro: Man, what is in this shit, man?
Man Stoner: Mostly Maui Waui man, but it’s got some Labrador in it.
Pedro: What’s Labrador?
Man Stoner: Yeah, my dog ate my stash, man.
Pedro: Yeah?
Man Stoner: I had it on the table and the little motherfucker ate it, man. Then I had to follow him around with a little baggie for three days, man, before I got it back. Really blew the dog’s mind, ya know?
Pedro: You mean we’re smokin’ dog shit, man?
3.)FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMOUNT HIGH
The film follows the lives of several students at the fictional Ridgemont High School over the course of one academic year. Young Sean Penn plays considered by many the most infamous stoner ever portrayed on film as Spicoli. The film also features young Forest Whitaker as the jerk head jock of the foot ball team. Fast Times is also arguably the king of coming-of-age movies, but we’ll save that debate for another list.
Favorite Line: “All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.” –Jeff Spicoli
2.)HALF BAKED
Half Baked marks the beginning of the budding(lol) career of comedian Dave Chappelle. The film follows the story of 3 friend desperate to make money to free there friend from jail and save his anal virginity. The film also marks the first writer collaboration of Chappelle and Neal Berrnan who would later go on to create the famed Chappelle Show. Half Baked has no shortage of cameo appearances that include Steven Wright, Tommy Chong, Janeane Garofalo, Willie Nelson, Tracy Morgan, Snoop Dogg, Jon Stewart, Stephen Baldwin, and Bob Saget.
Favorite Lines:
Thurgood: I’m here today because I’m addicted..to marijuana.
Rehab patient: You in here ‘cuz of marijuana?! Man, this is some BULLSHIT!
Bob Saget/Cocaine addict: Marijuana is not a drug. I used to suck dick for coke.
Rehab patient: I seen him do it!
Bob Saget/Cocaine addict: Now that’s an addiction, man. You ever suck some dick for marijuana?
Thurgood: I can’t say I have.
Bob Saget/Cocaine addict: I didn’t think so.
Rehab patient: Boo this man.
[Crowd of junkies boo Thurgood off the stage]
1.) Dazed and Confused
With hilarious and touching honesty, this critically acclaimed comedy explores the last day of school in the lives of a group of high school students in 1976. Stoned or not this is a great movie that has made it to the top of many critic’s top 10 list.
Also for many Hollywood stars this film was their first big break. Everyone’s in this movie; Ben Affleck, Adam Goldberg, Mathew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey, Joey Lauren Adams, and Anthony Rapp.
Favorite line: “Behind every good man(George Washington) there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.” – Slater
