To be a bad-ass you need to be in a full-on, action Anime. You have to be cool, and confidant and at times nasty.
Good or bad, these are the guys who kick ass and take names.
5. A seasoned Mecha warrior and a combat bad-ass, Eureka Seven‘s Holland is so tough that in the Manga his brother cut off his arm and he kept going. Of course beating up the whiny Renton didn’t make him look so tough–still, he proves his mettle getting the life sucked out of him piloting the Devil Ray, Mecha.
A great bad-ass character from an Anime with some of the best animation and music ever to come out.
4. Texhnolyze had some wild ideas throughout it’s run, but if anything it spawned one of the most bad-ass characters to ever hit an Anime. The main character Ichise is THAT bad-ass. After getting an arm and a leg on opposite sides of each other severed from his body, his will to live is so strong that he drags himself and his severed limbs through cobble stone streets–anyone who can do that and still stay alive is truly a bad-ass. Once the limbs are replaced with mechanical parts, he starts brutalizing his enemies with one hit head knock-offs. I’d make him number 1, but there are still fuller characters yet to come.
3. With fluid motion, savvy street smarts and a hardy trigger finger; Cowboy Bebop‘s Spike is one bad dude. He lives through explosions, bullet wounds, stabbings and a mean MF named Vincent who tried to rip his heart out. Too bad his final tune came at the hands of his former “brother” Vicious, at the end of the series.
Although Spike had gone through hell and back on many occasions, he said it himself, that only he can kill Vicious and Vicious could kill him.
A “mummy man” for a few episodes; when the bandages came off he was back out there ready to kick some ass and take all of the names.
2. X-TV has a great story, great animation and great music; it also has a great bad-ass. His sexual preference aside, Fuma or Kamui of the Dragons of Earth is the baddest MF there is in that show. What more could you want from a guy who offers someone their last wish before he kills you.
1. Gene Starwind is the Captain of the spaceship “The Outlaw Star“. By the end of the series he has so many notches in his gun belt that the pirates, a pair of bounty hunters and even a crazy old scientist can’t stand up to him.
Reminded on multiple occasions that he is a pig when it comes to women and lazy when it comes to real work; Gene only redeems himself from being an anti-hero by his brotherly love for his friend Jim and standing by his crew.
Gene Starwind’s broad spectrum gives him the number one spot.
There you have it, the top 5 bad-asses in Anime. You might have a different idea or order, but the honest explanations can’t be denied.

Great article! I loved your picks. Fuma is my persoanl favorite. He kicks ass and takes names. I’d also add Dante from the anime version of Devil May Cry. I have the series on blu ray and it has much ultraviolence an ass-kicking.
