Joseph Kosinski of Tron: Legacy will be directing a feature-length film adaptation of Oblivion, a graphic novel he helped to create along with Arvid Nelson for Radical Publishing. Oblivion first made its debut in November of 2010. Universal Pictures has acquired this $100 million flick from Disney, who won a bidding war for the rights last year then passed on the project. Oblivion is set for a 2012 release.
As the story goes, the main character (I’m thinking Tom Cruise) is a soldier who lives a solitary life on an uninhabitable, post-apocalyptic earth while human clones live high above the polluted clouds. Cruise’s job is to repair drones who patrol the landscape destroying aliens. But of course, his peace and quiet is disrupted by an attractive female who crash lands into his heart and changes his outlook on life.
While some are scoffing at the Wall-Eish premise, I can say that even that film wasn’t totally original. A little anime called Battle Angel Alita which came way before that had that same idea of the earth getting trashed and everyone having to – for all intents and purposes – leave, but a few. Before that one, there was a film from the 70’s called Silent Running which ended with one lone droid on a space ship watering plants all alone for seemingly the rest of eternity.
If done right, this film could be good: maybe something like Blade Runner meets Aliens. We already know Cruise can carry a film almost completely by himself and he’s done sci-fi before. The only question will be, who’s going to play his love interest?
