The Italian press is grilling Venice jury president Quentin Tarantino over two recent prizes the jury awarded to friends of his. In May of 2010, QT took the helm at the Venice Film Festival which reviews films and awards prizes like the “Golden Lion,” one of the most coveted awards in the industry. According to Deadline London, the two recipients in question are Tarantino’s mentor Monte Hellman, who was given a special lifetime achievement award and Sofia Coppola (said to be QT’s ex-gf) for her movie Somewhere, which stars Michelle Monaghan, Benicio del Toro and Stephen Dorff.
London’s Guardian reviewed Sofia’s film after its Venice premiere and said “For all the similarities, this does not have the brilliant seriocomic moments of Lost In Translation. If that was her hit single, then this is the B-side.” Tarantino denies any favoritism offering the jury’s unanimous decision as proof.
I haven’t seen Somewhere so I have no opinion on the film but I am definitely going to watch it now. You know what they say about there being no such thing as bad publicity…

I can’t see him being that irresponsible in a position like that. It seems like everyone in Hollywood is connected in one way or another anyway….

I’m just pleased that SC gave up acting. Every time I see Godfather III, her performance gets worse.
Lost in Translation was okay, didn’t see Marie Antoinette, and am not waiting with baited breath for the current film. I do love me some QT, though; awards aside, the proof will be at the box office.
