Rockin’ Android collaborated with Tune In Tokyo and threw a launch party for Suguri at the 2nd Street Cafe in Little Tokyo. The 2 1/2 d side scroller “indie” game has sold more than 50,000 copies in Japan. I didn’t know what indie games were all about so I asked the president, Enrique Galvez about it.
“What makes these games so cool is that they’re created by regular guys just like you and me. They have full time jobs and work on the games at night. For the most part, they do everything from programming, graphics and even music.”
“These games are underground and can be found in specialty video game shops in Japan” – Enrique added.
Now Rockin’ Android is bringing the games to the US, hoping to expose gamers over here.
“I think most gamers will appreciate it because it’s made from a fan’s perspective, they do it for love, not for money” – Enrique explained.
In fact, Rockin’ Android had to talk to the creator first and let them know that they’re hardcore gamers before releasing the game.
“Oh yeah, he was asking me what type of games I liked and asked me several questions regarding consoles. Once he knew we were hardcore gamers, he finally agreed to us publishing the game.”
The Rockin’ Android crew
I played Suguri and it reminded of Galaga. You’re constantly moving as you try to shoot down your enemies. Another game is a spinoff of Suguri, where the characters fight each other. It’s a multi player game and I had a hard time because I didn’t know the moves. It was a bit complicating but I’m sure once you’re familiar with the game, skills and strategies will be involved. The gameplay looked pretty deep.

The game retails for $19.99 and also includes an expansion pack and 2 soundtracks. It can be purchased on their site.
Enrique also told us that more games will be released in the future. Looking forward to it!
