Ever been bullied for being a nerd?  During elementary and junior high, I was picked on for being an “A” student and not with the “in” crowd.  But it’s time we stand up to bullies!  Not through violence but through the internet.  It all started when a first grader named Katie was mocked by her male classmates for bringing a Star Wars water bottle to school.  The guys told her Star Wars was just for boys.  But Katie disagreed with that statement, she loves Star Wars because she’s adopted just like Luke Skywalker.  Her mom wrote a blog about the incident and fellow nerds responded supporting Katie.  The story went viral and it even made the local news (video below).

Now there’s a Facebook event called “Support Star Wars and Geek Pride for Katie (you need to login to see the page)” happening on Dec. 10th.  The event is asking all the nerds and geeks to wear at least one Star Wars apparel for the day.  I’ve already confirmed for the event and I’ll be wearing my Che/Chewbacca shirt.  There’s more than 8,000 confirmed for the event as I’m typing this but it should reach 20,000 when the event draws closer.

Besides nerds uniting for a common cause, Katie’s parents are asking fellow attendees to donate a Star Wars toy to a local charity instead.  I have several unopened figs that I’ll be giving to the Salvation Army.  Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot of cyber bullying in the news but this story shows that the internet can be used for a good cause.  Plenty of female nerds also came out and showed their support for Katie, letting her know that being a Star Wars fan is okay!  I’m glad we’re finally uniting through the power of the internet.  Let our voices be HEARD!
