Spider-Man Meets Obama – Marvel a Copycat?

In probably what is the most publicized comic book story since the death of Superman, Marvel released Spider-Man #583 featuring Peter Parker covering Obama’s inauguration. Of course, a villain tries to ruin the party and Spider-Man saves the day. I wish I can tell you that I bought the comic, but it’s sold out everywhere. ABC news was also covering the event and some people that bought the issue never bought a comic book before. People were waiting in line for at least a couple of hours in the miserable winter New York weather just to get there copy. One guy even called out sick.

Regular Cover

I’m glad Marvel decided to do this story because it brings publicity to the comic book industry but it seemed like they copied Erik Larsen’s idea for Savage Dragon #137.  In the Savage Dragon variant cover, which was released in September, the superhero endorses Obama.   I didn’t know there was going to be so much hype for this book since Savage Dragon barely got any media attention. I thought no one knew about it except for the comic fans. Just like other big releases in the comic book world, Spider-Man #583 has two covers: the variant with Obama in the cover and a regular cover with no Obama. Variant is going for about $70 on Fleabay while the regular cover is going for an impressive $20 while the first print for Savage Dragon #137 is only going for about $20.

Erik Larsen used to work for Marvel in the 80’s and formed Image Comics in the 90’s.  Ever since then, he has despised Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada for creating stories that has a lot of hype and little substance and little originality.  While Larsen took a risk by endorsing a presidential candidate in September, Marvel made sure that everything is fine and dandy before releasing their issue.  With Spider-Man #583, many comic book fans also feel Joe Quesada just copied Larsen’s idea to make more money for the mighty Marvel Comics.

For me, I”ll  still buy the comic book.  I’ll wait for the 2nd print which should be coming out in a couple of weeks and pay the $3.99 cover price. I’m sure the story will be generic but I’m still curious.
