If you haven’t heard yet, there has been multiple reports stating that there will be an announcement about a new paid “premium” subscription to PSN users. According to VG247’s “highly placed source”, Sony will be revealing a “Premium Subscription Service” at this year’s E3. Since it’s inception till now, PSN has been a free online gaming service for PS3 owners with no monthly or annual charge. This new change for a paid service did not just come all of a sudden though. Close to the end of last year, Kotaku posted that Sony was considering a premium service and was conducting a survey regarding paid services.
Some of the services that are mentioned in the survey include loyalty reward programs, member only content and full title trials, which users gain access to full PS3 games for one hour. Currently, Sony has a partial outline of just some of the services offered in the premium subscription.
- One free PSN game every month from a selection of 2-4 games (each game costs anywhere from $10-$15)
- A possible streaming music app that can run in the background while you play your games.
- “Cross Game Voice Chat” feature that will be available for everyone, not just Premium Users.
The current possible price for this subscription is around $70, which is substantially higher than the $49 Xbox Live users pay for their Gold Subscriptions. That price is not set in stone though and is still subject to change. So far Sony has not officially confirmed nor denied these premium plans, so we’ll just have to wait until E3 gets here to see what they unveil.

eh, not of fan of this idea, since one of the selling points of the PS3 to me was the free stuff, which if you look at it, isnt really free.
Being the game whore that i am, i will pay for the subscriptions, but the price they have now is a bit steep.
Im hoping this isnt the final outline, because i find it odd, non of the options give you access to everything.
