At first, this game seemed lackluster. It felt sluggish and slow compared to Call of Duty 4 (COD4). The shooting system is very difficult to get used to, and the graphics isn’t all that great. Installing the game and the update could take up to 1.5 hrs, and It takes forever to get online to play. And when you’re on, there are lag issues and the game freezes up sometimes. I was really disappointed at how this game came out. But, I kept on playing because I was a SOCOM fan (the first one). Although I never played it online, I enjoyed the single player campaign, which this one does not have.
After playing it for a couple of days, I’m starting to enjoy this game more and more. The reason that it was very hard to jump over from COD4 is that this game is more realistic. You can’t just run around on your own, you’d have to be tactical and use your team to cover your back or vise versa. The weapons are fun to use because they all feel different. Certain weapons are heavier, which can slow you down. If you want to move like a rabbit, you’d have to use the lighter weapons, and change your gear to the minimum. But, this also means that you get canned faster. So, all of that balances out.
The maps are nice and well made. Sometimes, they can feel too big, and it’s almost hard to run into the enemies. The music is decent, it reminds me of Black Hawk Down. But, the sound design is top notch. If you have a surround sound, then you can really appreciate the sound of this game.
All in all, I’m really starting to enjoy this game. The real question is how long will the fun last? I still play COD4, and that’s been out for awhile. I just rented this game through Gamefly, but if i’m still playing this in about 2 weeks, then I’ll buy it with the headset for $60.
Rating: B- (without the server issues, I would give it a B+)
