There’s a lot of nerdy shirts out there but Retro Outlaw’s unique style caught my attention. The vintage design, mininal colors and mashup of iconic images make the brand stand out from other companies. I wasn’t sure what size to go with because it was my first time getting shirts from them. I decided to go with one small and one medium. Just to give you an idea, I’m 5’7′ and 135 lbs and the small shirt was too tight for me. The medium was perfect.
For the small shirt, I got a mashup of Pulp Fiction and Planet Of The Apes. Instead of Jules and Vincent pointing the gun, we have the apes taking their place. What I love about this shirt is the detail. Instead of the guns the characters are pointing, the apes have their bananas. The shirt is in black with white outlines of the character. Very simple design but people notice it right away that it’s based off Pulp Fiction. I love minimalist designs. The shirt is already out of print on their site so this one was a hot seller.
For the medium shirt, I got Chewbacca in the symbolic image of Che Guevara. There’s two version of this: red and military green. I chose green because I look like a ten year old when I wear really bright colors.
I think I like this shirt better than the Pulp Fiction one because the design is executed properly in a couple of ways:
1) Chewbacca is a rebel just like Che. Chewie even has the rebel star on his hat.
2) Chewie is perfect for this because he’s hairy as hell so the beard makes sense.
3) This is an inside joke for the people that wear the Che shirt. The real rebel leader was against corporations, yet so many people bought shirts with his face and guess who made money off that? Corporations!
4) This shirt gets me a lot of compliments when I wear it.
The shirts are 100% cotton and they’re not too thin or too thick. Just perfect. Even though they’re pre-shrunk, the shirts will shrink a little bit after the first wash, so make sure you get the right size. For me the medium was a little bit big but once it was washed, it fit comfortably.
The unique shirts retail for $20 and it’s a good deal for the quality and designs they offer. Hot Topic sells generic shirts based off comic covers and movie posters for $25 so I’m happy with Outlaw’s price.
This is the next shirt I want to get:
Make sure to check out their site because they update constantly with new designs and once the design is gone, they usually don’t offer it anymore.
