In the history of bad movie ideas, this definitely has to be up there. Granted there have been bad movie ideas that have turned out to be great films, but I highly doubt this is one of them. Rollercoaster Tycoon is a simulation game about building and maintaining an amusement park with no actual character interaction. Apparently the movie will be a mix of CGI and live action, but the storyline is still unknown. Unfortunately Sony is not the only studio venturing into making movies out of games with no plot. Universal bought the rights to do an “Asteroids” movie, Warner Bros. are in negotiations with Taito for a “Space Invaders” film as well as working on “Spy Hunter” and Fox is trying to acquire the rights to “Missile Command.”

In the wake of this film decision are many game-to-movie adaptations that have failed horribly including “Dead or Alive”, “Super Mario Bros.” and “Doom.” One would think with there being so many hundreds of video games with great a storyline, why on earth would they choose “Rollercoaster Tycoon?”

It baffles me too, but apparently Sony Pictures Animation studio decided it would be a good idea. Yes Sony, who is behind the Playstation 3 console, one of the three major consoles available. That same console which plays host to game titles like “God of War,” “Killzone,” “Uncharted” and “Metal Gear Solid,” all of which would make great movies with stellar storylines. If they really wanted to do an animation adaptation, what about “Ratchet & Clank” or “LittleBigPlanet?

It’s just crazy to think that film adaptations the likes of “Halo” and “Bioshock” get pushed aside and someone actually spends money on buying the rights to something like “Rollercoaster Tycoon.”  Well I say good luck to Atari and Sony on their new idea, we’ll see how it ends up soon.
