Update: Please check out our full Resident Evil review here.
Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 puts you in control of Chris Redfield who’s on a mission in Africa on an investigation to stop bioterrorism. He is accompanied by Sheva, his new hot partner who knows the terrains of Africa. Today, Xbox 360 owners get a chance to test out the Resident Evil 5 demo while the PS3 owners have to wait. I have to admit, after playing the demo, I’m not really excited about the game.
The newest addition to the Resident Evil 5 is the option of playing the game online cooperatively with another partner. Wait, never mind, you were able to do this in Outbreak, and with 3 other players.
The thing that I am really iffy about is the controls. They are still using the outdated clunky control scheme from Resident Evil 4. You can run and do quick 180 degree turns, but when faced with hordes of enemies, shooting and aiming is a chore. No, you can’t run and fight, or strafe and fight. You have to stand still while shooting or knifing. Dead Space, another third person survival horror shooter, did it right with its intense moments while being able to move around and shooting at the same time. Nothing stops an intense moment when you can’t move while shooting the infected baddies. Reloading your weapon also causes your character to stand still and this can lead to the enemy taking advantage of you.
But, the one thing that I do love about the demo is the graphics. This is a huge next-gen game, and as such, needs the proper treatment in cool looking heroes and grotesque humans and creatures. If it’s not one of the best, it’s up there with the other great-looking games. A game can have the coolest visual, audio, and story, but the controls can really put a damper on a game. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of RE fans that’s going to eat this game up when it comes out. Call me picky, but all I want is the ability to walk and shoot at the same time.

At first, i thought you were just a hater, but i played it last night, and this sucked compared to the 4th one. The character moves too slow, and the camera angle sucks. The controls are terrible. The only thing good is the graphics, but that’s pointless without a good gameplay. Also, adding an extra character to order around is a pain in the ass. This game feels like a chore.

Doesn’t the demo give you options to change the controls? Can you strafe when you’re not aiming? I was a big fan of RE4, so I wonder how this one stacks up against it. This is supposed to be the biggest game for the first half of the year, at least in the production value.

Ive been waiting for this game since after RE 1 RE 2 and nemisis. 4 didnt count(gamecube) but it was the best one.thats over 10 years of waiting and after playing the demo it is the worst game ever made if you stack it up against the hype. I would rather have those graphics thrown over RE1 so at least the dated inventory system and controls would be okay! The graphics are only that good because the game doesnt have to process anything quickly. everything is slow.Looks like more pre-rendered backgrounds and surroundings just like RE 1. there is one path to take and thats it. I WOULDNT EVEN DOWNLOAD THIS GAME FOR FREE IF I COULD. I HOPE MY XBOX HARD DRIVE ISNT FRIED FOR HAVING IT ON THERE!! Oh wait I im only playing pc from now on…

Yeah, you may be right. I might be over thinking things. But this is just how I felt while playing the demo. Who knows, the final build of the game might win me over.
But then again, demos are supposed to make me anticipate the game.

Yeah, so what if the game was crap, i mean, im not good at the other resident evil games (even though ive never really played on them myself, only watched friends play) i thought the game was ace, its the best from the others, the others are useless, ive played on this game countless of times and still want to re-play it, i was never a resident evil fan until this game came out, and it was only because my boyfriend had the game. and plus it has a few good points example it has cute characters (chris redfield) and some for the men. and what’s all this about the controls being terrible, that’s bull.
