Phantom Menace Released 10 Years Ago

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since Star Wars: Episode 1 – Phantom Menace came out in theatres.  I remember the crazy hype before the movie was released:  kids meal tie ins, stores opening at midnight to sell Star Wars Merchandise, record breaking number of downloads for the trailer.  I fell for the hype.  I must have watched the quicktime trailer at least 10 times. I also bought Star Wars memorabilia from the Legos’, toys and the cups at Taco Bell.

I skipped school the day the movie came out and watched it with my brother.  The line wasn’t too long, probably about 40 people deep.  I was really excited and I couldn’t wait for the awesome space battles and jedi fights.  Watched the movie and unlike most hardcore fans, I enjoyed the movie.  It wasn’t perfect but I enjoyed the pod race, the jedi’s duking it out with Maul and the space battle.

The highlight had to be Darth Maul taking on two Jedis and kicking ass.  Too bad none of the fight scenes in the other two prequels lived up to it.  George Lucas decided to go “CG” and you have Yoda spinning for thirty minutes again Count Dooku and Palpatine.  What was a cool concept became laughable.   Okay back to Episode 1….most of my friends actually liked the movie as well.  The first week it came out, it wasn’t blasted by the fans.  Maybe it was because the hardcore fans were in denial that it wasn’t as good as the original trilogy or that Jar Jar was annoying but as time passed by, the fans hated the movie.

To this day, Phantom Menace is still my favorite Star Wars prequel.  The acting was a little bit stiff but the action pieces kept me entertained.
