DC will once again release “origins” of Batman and Superman with “Earth One”. The books will be released in graphic novel formats instead of the traditional monthly issues. What sets this apart from other origins? Well, they’ll supposedly start their crime fighting career in this era with the technology and culture we have right now. Geoff Johns of Green Lantern fame will write Batman, while Michael Straczynski will script Superman. Check out the images below, click on the picture for higher res:
Wait, but there’s more! Grant Morrison will continue his highly popular and sometimes complicating Batman monthly issues with the return of Bruce Wayne in 2010. It seems like Bruce Wayne will take back his cowl next year after he suddenly disappeared in the “R.I.P.” storyline. Superstar Andy Kubert artist will draw for the new story. Based on the pictures below, it seems like Batman will be in several versions as he travels through time trying to find his real identity. That’s Grant Morrison for you!

I like my Alfred without the “non-stop weight training” style, thanks. Is he going to start kicking ass too? Oh wait, look look! He’s got a Royal Marines tattoo! Well that explains eee-very-thinggg…..
And would a guy wear a crew-cut AND have a Sam Elliot™®© goatee? I don’t think an ex-RM is going to be aerodynamically efficient with his dome and also want to taste his soup 2 hours after he ate it (thanks, Unforgiven!).
I think every other time we see Alfred, he should be in the weight room working on those triceps. You need some serious dedication for the definition he’s hitting.
Yeah, it’s just a comic, I know, but that’s the trouble with comic book artists today. If you’re trying to tell a story in the character design, then own up to it. All of it. Not just the parts you think are “cool.” If he’s really not a gym rat, then don’t give him a gym rat’s body. If he’s a true ex-RM, then trim that civil war antique around his mouth because there are all kinds of health violations not up to RM code.
Passing critique on Batman drawing: what kind of fabric is skin tight around a person’s kneecaps, ever? A mere foot above it’s looser around his junk, but look, not a wrinkle around the caps. Is the drawing meant to be realistic or not? Do you want us to look closely and compare it to reality or not? Choose a lane.
Here endeth the lesson (thanks Untouchables!).
