Netflix, my favorite video rental company will make an unprecedented move: Release WB movies for rent, 28 days after its release date.
In return, the rental giant will have more new WB titles for streaming content which can be played on the PS3, Xbox 360 and of course, their website. Netflix is doing this because most experts think streaming content will be the future for the video industry. If that’s the case, they better make their servers bigger because when I use the Netflix service on my PS3, it takes about 5 minutes to load a 10 minute segment. Then another load time before it plays again. Didn’t have this problem when Netflix’s service first started on PS3. I noticed the lag after about a month or so.
Another reason for this change is revenue. I’m sure WB is sweetening the deal if they release the movies late. It’ll give more reason for the consumers to buy the movie instead of renting it right away. I guess movie studios are hurting from these “cheap” rental services such as Netflix and Red Box. Red Box, a company that puts up rental machines at groceries and stores such as Wal-Mart and charges $1 for new releases, was recently sued by movie studios. The studios argument is that they’re losing money because instead of the shoppers buying the movie, they’d rather rent it for a $1. The studios stopped selling movies to Red Box but they found a loophole where they could still get movies through different distribution centers.
I don’t really care if I get a movie 28 days after its release date. Most of the time, new movies are on the waiting list for 3 weeks. I can wait an extra week while I rent my UFC’s and tv shows. I don’t really care for streaming videos either because I hate wasting time while it loads.
