Just when I was praising Netflix last week, I got an e-mail from them telling me that my subscription is going up by $2 in late May. They’re charging extra for Blu-ray. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this, they started charging me an extra $1 per month in January. So over a course of 6 months, the price will go up by $3. By the end of May, instead of paying $14.99 ($1 Blu-ray fee included), I’ll be paying $16.99.
$3 raise in a course of 6 months is pretty damn ballsy for Netflix. I was pissed at first but counting how many movies I get per month made me think otherwise. I get about 10 -12 movies per month and with the new price, that averages out to about $1.50 per movie. Can’t beat that since their selection is so much better than local video stores and Blockbuster.
I’m not sure if they’ve ordered more Blu-ray copies for newer movies, but this week I got Punisher: War Zone and Seven Pounds for Blu (getting it today). That’s pretty fast for movies that have been released in the past two weeks. Last time it would take a month before I could get the newer titles. It could be that they’re ordering more copies or both movies suck and nobody wanted to rent it.
Another cool feature about Netflix is the instant movie feature. If you have an Xbox 360 or a specially made video receiver, you can instantly watch movies on your TV through streaming connection. I watched Skeleton Key on Tuesday through my Xbox 360 and although the quality was comparable to VHS, it’s pretty cool watching a movie right away. The selection for streaming videos aren’t much but there are some decent ones.
Damn, with the praise I give Netflix constantly, I should just work for them. I even did my final college project on Netflix’s business model. What can I say, I love their service.

I like my Blockbuster online. I get new releases quickly. Not sure about Blu-rays though since I don’t have a player.
