DC has released another animated movie and this time, it’s from Jeph Loeb’s, “The Supergirl From Krypton” from the Superman/Batman comic. The art in the comic was done by the late Michael Turner and it’s a compelling story I’m probably biased with the story because I attended a Michael Turner seminar at Wizard World as the comic books were being released and he was so enthusiastic about it. As I was reading the comics, I can tell Turner really had fun with the project. His artwork was dynamic and amazing, he even went with a darker costume for Batman. The movie had a lot to live up because of the interesting story and Turner’s art and the result is a mixed bag. It’s more good than bad but it could’ve been better.
Batman finds Kara Zor-El off Gotham’s bay and Superman soons find out Kara is his cousin. Kara can fly and has superhuman strengths just like Clark. Kara doesn’t know how to use her powers and Wonder Woman takes her to Themyscira to fully utilize her fighting abilities. Kara’s time in the island is the highlight of the movie. She spends time with Wonder Woman and her Amazonian friends. Director Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern: First Flight) creates a relationship with the female characters that’s heartfelt and emotional. For some odd reason, the female characters looks more normal than Superman and Batman. Superman looks like a young model while Batman looks too skinny. I know they tried to imitate Turner’s artwork but it was iconsistent, especially Bats.
Darkseid attacks Themyscira and kidnaps Kara. He wants her to be the leader of the new Female Furies. So Superman gets really pissed and along with Batman and Wonder Woman, they attack Darkseid. The last battle is really good and the setting is a good contrast to how powerful the characters are. The movie is entertaining enough that the 115 minute length goes by quickly but that doesn’t mean the movie doesn’t have any issues. The biggest issue I had was with Batman. We all know he’s always wary of everyone’s motives but it gets old quick that he’s so negative. I wish the filmmakers fleshed out his character more and gave him more things to do besides standing around and complaining. Darkseid could’ve been more menacing. He didn’t look scary enough and the way he was beaten was a letdown.
While there were some issues wit h the movie, I’d still reccomend it for superhero fans. Superman gets mad like you’ve never seen him before and it creates an emotional impact. It was also a nice surprise to see how much Wonder Woman was involved with the story. It would’ve been boring if it was just Superman and Batman by themselves, we’ve seen it so many times before.
Grade: B

My major problem with this film is the fact that Batman had more of a supporting role and just stood around and sneered at Supergirl (with the little screen time he had). Overall, the film was decent and the Superman/Supergirl vs. Darkseid fight ruled!
