Movie Review: Funny People

Funny People is the latest film from comedy king, Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up). While it’s funny, the movie is more drama than a comedy.

Plot from IMDB: George (Adam Sandler) is a very successful stand up comedian who learns that he has an untreatable blood disorder and is given less than a year to live. Ira (Seth Rogen) is a struggling up-and-coming stand up comedian who works at a deli and has yet to figure out his onstage persona. One night, these two perform at the same club and George takes notice of Ira. George hires Ira to be his semi-personal assistant as well as his friend.

Review:
The movie had some funny parts, especially scenes where Jonah Hill showed up as Seth Rogen’s comedian friend and roommate. Little jabs between the characters made for entertaining scenes. Adam Sandler plays his character true to his real counterpart. He’s rich, famous comedian and shy in public. I wonder if the movie is somewhat based on his actual life.  Sandler does a pretty good job playing a depressed movie star.  Eric Bana steals the show as a lovable jerk. He’s only in it for a couple of minutes but he was the one you could relate to the most. It  The main problem of the movie is the length. At 2 hours and 15 minutes, the movie is too long and drags towards the end. This seems to be a problem for Apatow’s movies, you’re hooked the first 75% of the movie then you wonder when the movie will end.

Overall, it’s a good movie with a great message but without your typical Hollywood plotline.
