Movie Review: Dragonball Evolution

Let’s get this over with. Most of us knew this movie wasn’t the second coming to cure cancer, bring peace to the Middle East, or bring harmony to inmates in the Chino prison riot. James Wong made a cool horror flick called Final Destination, but everything went downhill from there.

Now we have Dragonball Evolution. It’s not as craptastic as Street Fighter or Batman and Robin, but it was a fun little diversion. If you’re looking for cheesy bad entertainment, then you’ve got the right movie.

Dragonball Evolution follows the story of Goku on a journey to find the Dragon Balls to stop Piccolo from destroying the world. On his adventure, he meets up with Bulma, Yamcha, and Master Roshi.

This movie showed signs of doom when Justin Chatwin was casted as Goku. I enjoyed Emmy Rossum in Phantom of the Opera, but her acting really devolved as Bulma, the gun-toting cutie. The only actor that was not that embarrassing to watch was Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi.

The story was forced and took no time for any moment of character development. Take for example Yamcha and Bulma. They first meet when Bulma and the gang falls in a hole. Yamcha offers his aid only if he gets something in return. Throughout the movie, they showed no signs of attraction then all of a sudden she falls for him. Maybe she was drawn to his bad acting?

In the intro, Piccolo was shown as a demon to be feared and as a result, a band of heroes locked him up 2000 years ago. Fast forward to the present and somehow he’s free with no explanation, kickin’ it in his flying ship looking for the Dragon Balls. And why does he want to destroy our world anyway?

But it’s the bad that made this film entertaining. The fans out there won’t get the Dragon Ball movie they wanted, but at least I have this craptastic movie. Thank you, James Wong. I thought nothing could top The One, but you’ve outdone yourself. Dragonball Evolution shows us that we can shoot out projectiles as long as we’re driven by cute Asian girls.
