Are you ready to rock with the latest offering from Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics line? August sees the release of Mara of Primus the second female figure from the New Adventures of He-Man branch of MOTUC. Let’s take a look!
Mara comes in the standard bubble and card like the other MOTUC figures. I absent mindedly removed the bubble from the card before realizing that I needed to take a picture of everything new first. Pay no attention if anything looks unkempt.
Flipped around the card features an offering of other NA related figures in the MOTUC line. I am absolutely thrilled that Mara was released. A year or so ago she was a part of a vote to see which NA figure would get released next. I don’t recall the other NA figure that Mara was up against, but thankfully she won the vote. She was never released in the original NA toy line though there was a prototype of the figure. This certainly makes for a great addition to most fans’ collections.
Mara’s bio is a nice one that fleshes out the character and describes her as a really strong heroic type. Her pony tail is also a mace. I don’t know why anyone would not be interested in this figure and character. There is a huge cool factor about her and her rivalry with Crita makes me long for the eventual release of an actual Crita figure.
Out of package Mara strikes an image that recalls a character from a fun role playing game. I feel like she would be right at home in a Phantasy Star video game or something. Possibly Final Fantasy, but I really get a feel of Phantasy Star from the old Sega Genesis when I look at her. I also liked the spike details on a few of her pieces of armor. It goes well with the mace at the end of her hair. It is important to also note that the bare torso sculpt has been reused for this figure. It has been awhile since we last saw that design element; I am assuming it was with the battleground Teela. I want to also stress that the colors used for Mara’s outfit are really bright and nice. That shade of blue works really well, it feels like we’re seeing something new and fresh when paired with the golden armor and boots.
The face is a lovely sculpt. There is also something slightly different about it from the serene goddess like faces of the past few ladies from the Great Rebellion. There’s an action to her face, maybe it is how her left eye brow flips up a little bit suggesting that even though she might be an ambassador of peace; she will still fight to save her world.
Her pony tail is so bad ass. It is made up of a soft plastic that can move and bend. There is no permanence in the bending, but it is not a stiff plastic. The mace at the end is a great finishing touch.
Here is a reference for how her hair fully looks. She can hold it and there is a chance for it to move. I really like the idea that she has a mace at the end of her hair. That is such a fun concept.
Her hair wielding mace is not the only weapon that Mara can use at her disposal. She also comes with a bladed staff with mace at the end and a shield. The shape and design of the shield is really nice, plus it is an added treat to see something slightly different than the standard PoP shield that we have been seeing with so many female figures.
I am also happy to note that this shield fits onto Mara’s arm very nicely. I have no idea if the folks at Mattel have been reading my reviews (probably not) and the fear I have with shields from the past, but this shield was easy to get on and off from Mara. The staff also fits into her hand rather nicely. That’s just really great! I must say, Mara has a lot of great things going for her; fun and easy accessories and probably the deadliest hair ever…
Double Trouble: Now wait a darn second! I seem to recall Miss M writing a review that my hair was pretty darn cool and could not be rivaled by anyone else!
Mara: I’m sure there was truth to what Miss M said, but I don’t see a mace at the end of that Madonna mop. I think we all know who wins out. I have a mace at the end of my hair. Come on now.
Double Trouble: Well… Well… I have different faces, and a cross bow!
Mara: That’s funny; I don’t really see a cross bow anywhere. Face it; I have the deadliest hair in all the mythos of MOTU.
Entrapta: I don’t think so! I’m pretty sure that I have the deadliest hair in all the land!
Mara: Is that so? You look like a miniature Barbie doll with all that fluffy pink hair.
Entrapta: You fool! Don’t you know who I am? While you have to whip your neck into a frenzy to lash out at your enemies with that heavy mace burdening your Pantene locks, I have the natural sense to control this hair of my own will. It moves when I tell it to.
Mara: I see. Maybe you have a point. The doctor has told me that I run the risk of a slip disk in my spine from all the head banging.
Entrapta: It is as I thought. I, the tricky golden beauty, shall rule the land with my hair; the deadliest of them all.
Double Trouble: Well she does have a darn good point.
Mara: Wait. Why are we fighting over who has the deadliest hair or not? I think it’s safe to say we all have pretty cool hair with style that others are too scared to rock. We should join forces.
Entrapta: What? And create our own line of hair care products?
Mara: No, not exactly, though that is a rather lovely idea. I was thinking more along the lines of starting our very own hair metal band!
Double Trouble: Hair metal band? That sounds like so much fun. There are only three of us though. We need a fourth member.
Mara: I might have an idea…
Mara: Do you think you’d be interested?
Double Trouble: We’ll write our own songs and perform at all kinds of venues.
Entrapta: We’ll totally knock the competition out of the park. Songster will have to find work at a Guitar Shack or something.
???: Sure. I’ll join.
Mara: Ok guys, this is our first gig! You all ready?
Entrapa: My drums are set to go and who knew my hair would make the perfect drumsticks? I’m so used to strangling people with my luscious locks…
Double Trouble: Now you can strangle them with sound! My skills at a keyboard will be great; I’ll be a dash glamorous with a bolt of trouble!
Jewelstar: You’ll do fine Double Trouble. We all will. We’re the most bad ass glam hair metal band in the universe!
Mara: That’s right ladies.
Mara: Let’s show this joint how we really do it: Hair Raisers, let’s rock!
Grade: A+ (Mara is a standout figure in the MOTUC line. The design is cool and I love how her accessories fit without any fear of chipping or messing up the arm paint. A solid figure!
