Michael Fassbender’s “Shame” Gets NC-17 Rating

Michael Fassbenders Shame Gets NC 17 Rating

When Fox Searchlight picked up US distribution rights for this critically-acclaimed film, it was with the stipulation that if it ever did get slapped with an NC-17 rating, the dirty parts could not be edited out.   Of course according to reviews I’ve read, this would mean there would be virtually nothing left of the film to watch because Fassbender goes full Magneto throughout most of it.  His co-star Carey Mulligan (Drive, Never Let Me Go) bares all as well.

In a film that is being compared to Midnight Cowboy, Last Tango in Paris and American Gigolo, Fassbender reportedly turns in a gripping performance of a sex-addict living in NYC.  Here is the synopsis from IMDB: “In New York City, Brandon’s carefully cultivated private life — which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction — is disrupted when his sister Cissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay.” Yeah so guess who Mulligan plays?  That’s right, his sister.

Okay, so yeah, the topic of the film gets a little Oldboy on us.  But while torture porn and horror flicks that glorify beheadings and bloody violence skate along with R ratings, full-frontal nudity continues to get the shaft. Word has it Fassbender might get an Oscar nomination out of this one so all that dropping trou won’t be for nothing.  Shame is set for a December 2nd release.  Here’s a trailer.
