Yeah, I’m late in the game but I just found this out after finishing up MGS4 (I didn’t want to spoil myself so I steered clear from anything Metal Gear related).

The video above shows the instrumental “The Snowstorm – Winter Road” by Sviridov.  It is eerily similar to the Metal Gear Solid theme. This piece was created in ’74, clearly way before when Metal Gear was created.  The person responsible for the MGS theme is Tappy, back in ’98 when the first Metal Gear Solid game came out (Harry Gregson-Williams only rearranged it for MGS2 and MGS3.)

Nothing is certain yet if Tappy really took parts of this Russian piece or if it’s just one big coincidence.  Apparently Igromania, a Russian video game magazine, knows of Sviridov and wanted to surprise Kojima by showing his works.  You can check out that interation here.

Haven’t found out yet if Sviridov’ people took action, or if Kojima didn’t want any problems, but that’s the reason why Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn’t have the memorable theme that the MGS fans have been waiting for.

Well, copyright infringement or not, I wanted to hear it in MGS4 and would rather have some kind of collaboration with Kojima and Sviridov’s people (Sviridov has been dead for some time now).

So in conclusion, all I’m going to say is FUCK IGROMANIA for bringing this shit up before the release of MGS4.
