As the holidays get closer, one can`t help but think about compiling gift lists, and those include toys! While browsing in a local toy store last week, some of the re-issued Mego-type action figures caught my eye. Mattel has re-introduced several of the DC heroes in their Retro-Action line, including Batman, Superman, and the Flash. Villains like Manta and Two-Face are also featured. They are dressed in colorful cloth outfits which mirror the ones worn by the 70`s/early 80`s Megos-and also bring back memories of my brother and I carefully peeling off the figures` cloth leotards and dressing them as each other.
Detail on the faces varies a bit-they do look a bit crude compared to, say, the artistry on the recent line of JLU toys or the Marvel Famous Covers line, but then, these guys are supposed to look retro. And the costumes are more detailed and authenic than the ones on the older Megos. Another plus is that the Retro-Action toys are made of a fairly durable plastic and lack the shoddy rubber band construction of the old toys. That may sound like a given, but anyone who actually played with an old Mego is familiar with the problem of the figures contorting into unatural shapes and sometimes breaking in two. This also makes it hard to display them on a stand. Personally, I think the newer line is appealing and has a great nostalgic vibe. I don`t know what kids will think, but the eye-popping colors and superior construction may entice them. My only question is, where are the Marvel heroes?
