A whole New Year is upon us and before the 2014 Masters of the Universe Classics subscription kicks in, I thought it would be fun to take a look at a 2013 release: Sea Hawk! This heroic Etherian Pirate has long been on many a fan’s wish lists, and in 2013 Mattel made those wishes come true. Released as the special subscriber only figure from the Filmation mini sub, Sea Hawk somehow made it over to my well manicured hands. (Thank you eBay.) Let’s look!
Before we get into the fun details of the figure, I thought it would be important to do a little run down on just who Sea Hawk was. He only appeared in a handful of She-Ra cartoon episodes and though his allegiance seemed to be for himself in the beginning, he quickly became a member of the Great Rebellion to help bring down the Horde. He was also a bit of a romantic lead for Adora’s affections; though the cartoon never really expanded upon that greatly since it was a Saturday morning cartoon. He wasn’t panting up a storm like, say, Frosta over He-Man, but he did get pretty close to Adora.
Here we have the figure. Sea Hawk comes packed in the typical MOTUC packaging that has come to represent the MOTUC figures. Looking at this figure in package is a treat. Mattel never released Sea Hawk with the original She-Ra line. I believe Filmation Studio owned the rights to Sea Hawk and as a result we never got to see him in figure form, until now! This is why for some fans; his release is a big one. Much like Shadow Weaver or Octavia, certain Princess of Power fans are finally getting the chance to own these characters in figure form. It is truly a magical experience.
Up close Sea Hawk maintains his look from the cartoon. The colors for his clothing look vibrant while still carrying on the look of a rough and tough pirate. He also comes with a sword and a shield that is packed behind him.
When flipped around the back of the card shows off some other PoP characters for sale. Most of these will look familiar to those who have been following the MOTUC reviews on NERDSociety.
Above is the requisite bio card. I love the image they used for Sea Hawk. I think it is one of my favorite images of him. His ‘real’ name isn’t too terrible, but he is always just Sea Hawk to me. As with the other Filmation bios, Sea Hawk’s bio is essentially a capture of his appearances in the cartoon. His is a unique tale. I do love stories involving a character of questionable morals and following him or her on a journey to their own conclusion on how to use their talents for the greater good or the very villainous. I am glad though that Sea Hawk became a member of the Great Rebellion.
This was certainly a purchase that had to be removed from the packaging. One does not own a Sea Hawk figure only to leave him mint. He is a pirate and needs to be free to do what pirates do!
Looking at him in more detail, he contains the same level of articulation as a standard MOTUC figure. This particular figure has great joints; nothing feels loose or ready to break. Paint applications all look fantastic. The only issue I have with the figure is that he seems very bulky. I always thought of Sea Hawk as a slimmer guy and not as muscular, but I also understand that the point of the MOTUC line is that characters are going to share/reuse parts. It was only unsettling for a moment though, after awhile everything just ends up looking great.
He comes with a red bladed sword with blue handle and a yellow near-translucent shield. The yellow almost has a glow-in-the-dark coloring to it and that is very cool!
What to do with Sea Hawk? How about some more pictures? (I do apologize upfront. Since I have been in the process of moving, all of my great backdrops for photos are packed away for the time being.) Either way, what kind of adventures could Sea Hawk find himself in?
Well, he could always do battle against one of his enemies: Octavia! Their fights in the cartoon were always entertaining. Sea Hawk would get wrapped up in a tentacle or two, but the side of good would always prevail.
For some Sea Hawk represents a piece in the unofficial love triangle puzzle between Bow, Adora/She-Ra, and the pirate. The toy line had it set up that She-Ra and Bow had a special friendship that had romantic undertones. Especially in the mini comics since Catra was always jealous of their connection. The cartoon was different though, Sea Hawk and Adora had more of a romance. Though, I do seem to recall Bow also having a crush on She-Ra in at least one episode. Either way, fans have created a fun complicated romance with these characters through the years. Or maybe it’s just me that lives for that fluff.
Either way, for those that are #TeamSeaHawk, here’s your picture.
(This nerd girl is going to always be #TeamBow though!)
Look at that. The Great Rebellion just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It feels like just yesterday that I was waiting patiently for more members of the Great Rebellion to arrive, and the ranks just keep growing. I can’t help but wonder who else we will see this time next year. The Great Rebellion will hopefully be even bigger. However, with Sea Hawk now in the group, it is starting to feel just right.
Grade: A (Sea Hawk gets an A for amazing since this is the very first time fans are able to have him in figure form. The vest makes him look a little bulky, but it can be removed, so he always has that.)

Great sculpt, and a nice figure.
I like the group shot, you have Glory Bird and Kowl, and of course Castaspella–can’t go wrong; next up…Glimmer! Your She-Ra dreams are coming true!
