It turns out Leonardo DiCaprio could have been a superhero at least 3 times. In an interview with Shortlist.com, he spoke about his opportunities in being involved with Batman & Robin, Spider-Man and Star Wars.
Here’s what DiCaprio had to say about Batman & Robin where he was approached to play Robin:
“I had a meeting with Joel Schumacher. It was just one meeting and, no, I didn’t end up doing it…As I recall I took the meeting, but didn’t want to play the role. Joel Schumacher is a very talented director but I don’t think I was ready for anything like that.”
When asked if he dodged a bullet, DiCaprio just laughed.
On Spider-Man role:
“That was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn’t feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me.”
On Star Wars where he was considered for Anakin:
“Didn’t feel ready to take that dive”
Instead of choosing high profile roles, DiCaprio chose dramatic movies such as Aviator, Gangs Of New York and Departed. While he could have made more money taking the Spider-Man and Star Wars role, DiCaprio is one of the biggest Hollywood stars today because of the quality of movies he’s involved in.
Look at where Chris O’Donnell (Robin) and Hayden Christensen (Anakin) are at now. They don’t have the star power that DiCaprio has, even Tobey Maguire aka Spider-Man hasn’t had a hit in a while.
