Serinda Swan is an actress and model. She recently guest starred as the DC Comics’ magician Zatanna on the excellent episode of Smallville called Hex. Smallville has been on The CW Network for 8 seasons now and is one of my favorite television series of all time. NERDSociety recently interviewed Ms. Swan and asked her about her career and her awesome role on Smallville.
NERDSociety.com (NS): Serinda, tell our readers a little about yourself. How long have you been involved in acting ? How did you get your career start?
Serinda Swan (SS): I have been involved in acting since I was three. My first job was on a movie called ‘Cousins’ which my mother and sister was also in (my mother booked the role and I think we were just part of a package deal). I remember Ted Danson giving me a little bag of gum and candy from the crafty table, and I remember thinking, “This is the best job ever! I get free candy all day!’ I think my career path was chosen right then and there! After a few years I took a break from acting and got heavily into gymnastics, then after that, modeling. It wasn’t until about two and a half years ago that I met my agent and I was back at my dream job… free candy and all!
NS: How did you get the role of Zatanna on Smallville? What appealed to you about playing Zatanna?
SS: I got the role of Zatanna, by auditioning here in Vancouver, and on the drive home I got the call from my agent that I had booked it! I tried to find out as much as I could through comic book stores and every website I could possibly find. She has such an amazing story, so it was very important to me to keep it as accurate as possible. I was extremely interested to find out that her story was intertwined with the alchemist Nicholas Flamel, which she is a direct descendant of, and that she was involved in the first major comic book crossover in 1964, where she interacts with Batman and Robin. Plus she has amazing super powers so what girl wouldn’t want that!
NS: Before getting the role of Zatanna, were you into comic books? If so, which ones?
SS: Does Archie count? 🙂
NS: Who’s your favorite comic book superhero and why?
SS: Zatanna obviously!
NS: Smallville has been a huge hit for 8 seasons now. Were you intimidated jumping into an established series? How was it working with the cast?
SS: It was a bit daunting coming on a show with so many seasons under its belt with such a solid cast, but with everyone being so welcoming and with Mairzee Almas as the director, it wasn’t hard at all to feel at home. Its great to finally be a part of the Smallville cast!
NS: Girls and women in general (including my own mother) love Tom Welling. Is he the all-around nice guy he portrays on Smallville. Clark Kent is portrayed as noble and heroic, qualities that are sometimes in short supply these days in the real world.
SS: Absolutely, he was lovely to work with and was a complete gentleman (just don’t ask him to tell you any sheep jokes!)
NS: What’s the web address of your official website so fans can write to you?
SS: You can go to my personal website www.serindaswan.com or go to http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2100657/ where you can write me messages and see what projects I will be in next.
NS: What future projects that you are involved in would you like to share with our readers?
SS: I’m involved in the new Tron movie that Disney is doing, which I’m very excited to be apart of!
NS: Do you think Zatanna will return one day to Smallville?
SS: I hope so! They alluded to the Justice League coming together, so if that happens you will see her back for sure.
NS: Any final words for your fans and especially Smallville fans?
SS: I hope I did you guys proud! Thanks for letting me be apart of the wonderful world of Smallville!

What a great girl! She really cared to keep the part pure and doing research is just great–I wish a lot of other people involved in both Superman and Batman would do some research before making fools out of themselves.
I love: Does Archie count? A fellow fan of the Archie comic series–Awesome!
The interview was very professional and very interesting; unlike the trash that TV Guide crapped out, they should be embarrassed!
Great job on this interview–it’s very impressive.
She really spilled a lot of things–I can’t believe they are making Tron again…it doesn’t work with 3D video games running the market–oh well…
Once again, good job on the interview and props to Serinda for taking the time.

I love Zatanna and she fits the role very well 😉
I’m looking forward to Tron 2 so that they can add that in the next Kingdom Hearts game, lol.

I think Zatanna was good, too. I’m not exactly a Smallville fan. Just ask CCF. He’ll definitely vouch that. But I did think she was good in that role. But seriously, you gotta get an
interview with M. Night. And be sure to tell him Circus80 is
his number 1 fan, and that no movie he makes will ever let him down, except maybe the soon to be released Avatar: The Last Airbender. 🙂

Any chance you can interview her again? She’s returning to Smallville again in a few weeks.
