By now, everyone knows about the untimely death of actor Heath Ledger, the talented actor who was well on his way to stardom. He was due to play the iconic Joker in the next Batman film, The Dark Knight. Here is a listing of his work that I have seen that is well worth a spot on your Netflix queue. All of the following should be readily available on DVD.
Roar: The short-lived but entertaining FOX series is the first time I noticed Ledger. He was a young leader of a Celtic tribe fighting to protect his people and land from sinister Romans. The DVD set of the entire 13 episode run was released a few years back.
Blackrock: Ledger had a tiny role in this powerful (and based on fact) drama from Australia about a teen surfer who witnesses a horrible gang rape but struggles with reporting it because of the bond with one of the rapists. A very intense, interesting film.
Two Hands: A fun, twisty crime thriller from Australia that was actually made way back in 1999 but only released in the US because Brokeback Mountain was such a big hit. If you like Tarantino style films (minus gimps and toe-sucking) this is the film for you.Â
The Four Feathers: The big budget box office flop is worth seeing for its amazing cinematography and good performances. It’s not a great film, but I enjoyed it a lot.
Brokeback Mountain: I think Brokeback suffered a lot from the hype but when viewed on its own terms I can’t say enough good things about it. Ledger is terrific (so is Michelle Williams) and the theme song has become iconic.Â
Candy: This is another barely seen film that is worth your time. Young lovers/heroin addicts attempt to kick their habit in this gritty and sometimes touching film.Â
