In August, Masaki Kitamura, who was AD on both seasons of Mobile Suit Gundam OO, was arrested for posting a message on the city of Osaka’s website in July which read: “I will commit a massacre in Otaroad next Sunday. I will ram into pedestrian paradise, and after stabbing indiscriminately with a knife, I will commit suicide” on July 29 at about 9:45 p.m.” Otaroad is an area in Osaka where this “pedestrian paradise” is held; it’s a sort of Farmer’s Market type deal where the streets are closed off to cars and people can walk around and shop.
Kitamura has been proclaiming his innocence since day one and it wasn’t until just a few days ago that he was finally released. Police finally determined that someone must have accessed his computer by remote and posted the message. The 42-year-old was originally accused because the police had found that the IP address that sent the message was connected to Kitamura’s wireless router. Authorities also believe that a bomb threat sent to Japan Air in August originated from the same source.
Kitamura directed an installment of Gundam Evolve and other anime like Wolf’s Rain. I hate to think he was targeted because someone didn’t like his artistic direction. Sheesh.
