DC’s superstar writer, Grant Morrison (Batman, JLA) will be working with artist Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman) on a new comic, Pax Americana. Characters from Charlton Comics that Watchmen characters were based off will be the primary focus. Morrison wants a similar story to Watchmen but the backdrop will be today’s political climate instead of the Cold War.
In an interview with Comic Heroes, Morrison said:
“We thought it would be appropriate to re-think and update the kind of in-your-face self-relecting narrative techniques used by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and to apply them to a whole new story which asks ‘what if Watchmen had been conceived now, in the contemporary political landscape and with the Charlton characters themselves, rather than analogues?”
Alan Moore, the writer for Watchmen, is pretty much pissed off at everybody right now so Morrison probably didn’t even ask for his permission to update his story. Moore doesn’t have faith in the entertainment industry anymore after his comics, such as From Hell and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen were butchered by Hollywood. The movie version of Watchmen was okay, didn’t have emotion but the visual was nice.
As for Morrison’s work, I loved his All-Star Superman as it dealt more with Clark Kent’s personal issues and it made him more sympathetic.
Amazon is having a sale right now on All-Star Superman graphic novels and at $10 per volume, it’s a great deal. They also have Watchmen if you haven’t read the classic novel yet.
