The Gamestop Expo wasn’t your average con. First of all, it only lasted one day, which is rather unusual since conventions generally run 2-3 days. But that was okay because this expo was more about quality than quantity. It was held at the Sands Expo Convention Center which is located just behind the Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas. The facilities were gorgeous: clean, new, spacious. There weren’t too many cosplayers but that didn’t surprise me because this was only the second year that Gamestop decided to open up their annual gathering to the public. For years, this convention was only open to the company’s store managers from across the US. Last year, they decided to extend it for a day and invite the public in on the fun. It was such a success that they did it again this year. If you are not familiar with Gamestop, they are the largest chain of retail stores in the US that specializes in video games.
Where else can you go to play the latest games like Call Of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, or Halo Spartan Assault and check out the most up to date consoles like Xbox One and Playstation 4? COD Ghosts doesn’t come out until November; Battlefield 4 – October 29. The new game called Destiny looks awesome, by the way. Anyone who loves video games would have a field day at a convention like this. What’s great about it is that the con is still so new, the lines weren’t really long like what you might see at SDCC or some others. But it wasn’t just about playing video games. Okay, it was mostly about the games but the folks from Sony and Xbox also held Q & A discussions about their new consoles. There was also a panel about Gaming Careers.
Xbox held some top secret panels that were for Gamestop managers only. At least, that was what the guy at the door to the banquet room told me when he very enthusiastically wouldn’t let me in, and then laughed in my face (but in a nice way). Oh, and the VIP swag bag was pretty amazing, too, which had stuff like a t-shirt, baseball cap, the new Madden 25 game, the Blu-Ray Mad Max trilogy, a gaming headset, Hot Wheels cars, and a blow up plastic Assassin’s Creed sword. Not to mention the VIP lounge which had games set up on big screens, desserts, finger foods, refreshments, and even a massage therapist. This was absolutely one of the best cons I’ve ever been to. If you’re into video games, you’ll definitely want to check out the Gamestop Expo next year.
