Film Review: Resident Evil: Degeneration – More Like Degenerate CG

How fitting that this Resident Evil movie is called Degeneration, because that’s what I think about the CG animation in this movie. Fans of the game will enjoy this, but the CG animation and the voice acting really put a damper in a movie that’s just another rehash of an “unknown infestation spreads while our heroes have to stop the evil corporation” storyline; only this time, it starts out at an airport. Didn’t I see this in Flight of the Living Dead?

For those that haven’t followed the game, Resident Evil: Degeneration takes place 7 years after the events of Resident Evil 2, the game. Raccoon City gets annihilated because the T-Virus caused an outbreak. Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for creating the T-Virus and the outbreak in Raccoon City, goes down because of it.

Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are back and thanks to yet another zombie outbreak in the airport, they have to save the day again. While trying to flee from the infestation, they have to figure out the mystery behind the outbreak involving a short and fat senator, Ron Davis, a shady grey-haired British, Frederic, who loves tea and the connection between WilPharma Company and the T-Virus.

The acting is pretty bad, and it’s even more noticeable with the bad facial animation. For a movie about zombies, it’s funny to see our heroes look like one themselves because of their soulless eyes and non-emotional faces, even during intense scenes.

Even though the facial animation gives me the creeps, like those porcelain dolls, the female character-models are nice. Claire looks hotter with a bigger bust. Angela, one of the cops sent to help out Leon, is also a buxom beauty with Jolie-type lips. Too bad Leon got the shittier end of the stick because his acting is very flat and one-dimensional, and his is the worst acting of the group with his monotone voice.

The movie provides no thrills and for a movie about survival horror, not once did I feel like wetting my pants. At least it’s not as cheesy as the live-action Resident Evils with Milla Jovovich running around beating up big monsters with their bare hands, jump kicking zombie dogs and crashing through a stained-glass window of a church on a bike with guns blazing. The only thing saving this movie from total degeneration is the fact that Leon actually kisses a girl and Claire is such a cutey.
