The video game community is buzzing about Fox News reporting that playing Epic Games’ Bulletstorm will make cause kids to become rapists. They interviewed a pyschologist and she said the following “The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in .” Fox couldn’t really prove that were were rape scenes in the game but instead started complaining about the sexual lingos used for kill combos such as “gang bang.”
Rightfully so, gamers are livid with the ignorant statements from Fox but Epic Games, the team behind Bulletstorm should personally thank the conservative news outlet. By Fox asking the readers in the title “Is Bulletstorm the Worst Video Game in the World?”, this only creates buzz that no marketing team could achieve. Look, we’re talking about the game right now that doesn’t come out for another two weeks (Feb 22, 2011 is the release date) and by the time it’ll be out, everyone and their grandma will know about the game.
With parents not letting their kids play the game because of the Fox article, Bulletstorm will be the game that every kid in school will be talking about. The more the kids can’t play it, the more they’ll want the game. And those sneaky kids will find a way to purchase the game.
Another reason for the hype is that the Fox News article will be shown on your local news channel as well and that’ll just create more awareness for the game. Now, we’ve heard of Bulletstorm for a while because we’re into games but for the casual gamers, they’ve just been introduced to the game. It’s free publicity for Epic Games just like what the media did for GTA and Mortal Kombat in the past. Those games were “controversial” when it was first released but they became more succesful thanks to media calling them “shocking” and “degrading.”
From what I’ve seen with Bullestorm it seems to be fun but time will tell whether it’s worth buying. But Cliffy B, from Epic Games should send a big ass thank you card to Fox News for creating hype for the game.

Fox News, always worthless, all the time. More misinformation from the Fake News Network.

I just read that article and I can honestly say that nothing I’ve ever read has made me so angry. I am goddam sick of lazy parents shifting the responsibility of raising a child to corporations, it’s quite literally sickening.
And that quote from the psychologist is the icing on the cake, I can’t believe that some psychologists are still so ignorant. People who play sex related games don’t then devolop some kind of urge to rape people, it’s because they’ve had that underlying problem all of their life. This is exactly like the Tipper Gore debacle in the ’80s, only now it’s not metal music that makes our kids bloodthirsty serial rapists, it’s video games! It seems people constantly need to shift the blame to different forms of media in order to cover up the shitty job they’ve done as a parent.

I find it interesting how violent video games get all the bad press, like they are specifically targeting ten-year-olds. This is rated M for a reason, it is for adult audiences.
This form of media is no difference than the film industry. There are plenty of extremely violent rated R movies, yet they don’t get any bad press such as “Hostile” or “Saw” turning a ten-year-old into a serial killer and rapist. Of course not, everyone knows this is a movie for older audiences.
If parents are so worried, why do they buy their children M rated games? Obviously no one is paying attention and the parents themselves are the ones to blame. Why can no one see that video games are just like any other form of entertainment, with different genres and different target audience with each game. There are games for children and games for adults, clear and simple. You can’t put “Lego Star Wars” in the same category and standard as “Bullet Storm”. No, they are for different audiences just as “Toy Story” is to “Saw”.
This is just another example of Fox News with its classic “Fear Mongering” techniques in order to restore their conservative ideas and for the mindless to vote for Republicans to protect the children.
