Not Easily Broken, based on the novel by T.D. Jakes, is cliched but well worth checking out. Tyler Perry fans will also enjoy the film (Perry is even quoted on the DVD cover). The plot is standard and the timeworn gimmick never stop coming, but the film itself has a simple and stirring message of overcoming hardship. The acting from Morris Chestnut and especially the wonderful Taraji P. Henson elevate the material into an above-average film. The supporting cast is also strong and the film is inspirational and occasionally funny as long as you can overlook a few major flaws and a predictable narrative.

“Not Easily Broken” is about upper-middle class married couple Dave (Chestnutt) and Clarice (Taraji P. Henson). Their marriage is tested by money problems, and most notably a serious car accident. The film presents a number of challenges that the couple must overcome to save their marriage from disaster. The temptations and arguments are nothing new, but the film will ring true to the film’s intended audience and it doesn’t get overly preachy. The DVD has a nice widescreen transfer and a few extras, like a few deleted scenes and a short making-of featurette that runs around 13 minutes.

“Not Easily Broken” is an earnest film. The strong performances and message of hope make the film an easy one to recommend. The DVD is solid, if not spectacular, and the film is well-worth at least a rental. Fans of Jakes and people who have never heard of him should enjoy the film equally. Taraji P. Henson is the shining star of the film, and viewers who saw her in “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” will enjoy her work here immensely.
