DVD Review: Deadliest Warrior Season 1

deadliest season1 DVD Review: Deadliest Warrior Season 1

Remember in grade school when you’d have arguments with your friends about your favorite warrior?

Well, Spike took that idea and turned it into a tv show.  The show pits two warriors and based on scientific weapon testings , we see the victor.  I love this show but there’s some flawed logic to the show’s  scientific tests. The warriors strategy and tactics aren’t put into play and this is my biggest gripe.  For example, the Spartans were kickass because they worked as one cohesive unit but in the show,  the spartan is fighting by himself.  This gives his opponent, a ninja, a better chance of winning the fight.  While the show has a flawed logic, I still enjoy the tests and the final battle sequence at the end of each episode.  The tests are fascinating because of the enthusiastic hosts: Geoff Dessmoulin, Armand Dorian and the nerdy simulator tester, Max Geiger.  The hosts argue which weapon is better and if it’s effective or not.  It adds drama to the show and it’ll keep you guessing who’s really the best warrior.   The final battles are well done and sometimes more enjoyable than high budget action movie fight scenes.

Below are the matchups:

Episode 1-  Gladiator vs. Apache:  This looked like a one sided match on paper but it was a great duel between the two fighter.  Great way to kick off the show.

Episode 2 – Viking vs. Samurai: Samurais are my favorite so this was awesome for me.  Vikings were no joke though because they carried big ass weapons.

Episode 3 – Spartan vs. Ninja:   This matchup didn’t really make sense but it was enjoyable because ninjas are always cool.

Episode 4 –  Pirate vs. Knight:  I had a lot of discussion about this matchup when I was a kid.  Sad to say, it wasn’t as interesting as I thought it’d be.

Episode 5 – Yakuza vs. Mafia: I think they got this matchup from the classic Simpsons episode where the two groups had a big brawl at Homer’s house.  Must watch!

Episode 6: – Green Berets vs. Spetsnaz:  I was disapointed with this because they didn’t really tests their strategies.

Episode 7 – Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior: I like this episode because I never knew the Shaolin Monks could be so lethal.

Episode 8 – William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu:  Two great leaders going at it.  It was cool learning about the real weapons they used as opposed to what you saw in Braveheart and Shaka Zulu the movie.

Episode 9 – Taliban vs. IRA: This has the funniest battle of the season.  Watch it for comedy!

The DVD comes with a webisode for each matchup.  The webisodes answers questions from fans regarding some of the flawed logics behind the tests.  It was actually better than I thought.  Also props to Max Geiger for flaunting an Aquaman shirt that I constantly wear.

The show is presented in anamorphic widescreen 16:9.  For the most part, the video is clear and it looked good on my Plasma, while the webisodes weren’t as sharp.  The audio is in dolby digital 2.0 and gets the job done.  The voices are clear and leveled.

Deadliest Warrior is a fun show that always intrigues me.  I like the way the weapons are tested and the unpredictable final battles are always fun.  As long as you don’t take the battles too seriously, you’ll have a good time.
