Blue Mountain State1 DVD Review: Blue Mountain State: Season One (Spike TV)

Blue Mountain State is a low-brow comedy series from Spike TV that often plays like an American Pie/Porky’s hybrid about a college football team of idiots and sex-crazed morons. The show is often funny, even when it’s extremely stupid, often at the same exact time. The series will mostly appeal to the Spike TV demographics of beer-swilling sports fans, but people who enjoy a raunchy comedy will enjoy it as well. All 13 episodes of season one are included on the DVD set. Blue Mountain State pushes the bounds of network standards as well as good taste. Sex, drugs, and sex gags are what this show is all about.

Blue Mountain State is about a college football team and some new rookies trying to make their way. Alex Moran is a second string quarterback while Same Jones from Smallville is the star running back. The real scene-stealer is Alan Richson (who plays Aquaman on Smallville) as the jerk linebacker/team captain Thad Castle. Thad is loud, obnoxious, and possibly in the closet and Richson steals every scene in the show. Blue Mountain State looks good on DVD and includes a few extras including deleted/alternate scenes and a nice picture in picture commentary where cast members watch scenes from the show and comment on them.

Blue Mountain State isn’t particularly well-written or acted, but it is occasionally quite funny. It’s definitely worth picking up for fans of raunchy sex comedies like American Pie or Road Trip. Season two starts on Spike TV very soon so now is the time to check out the series to see if its your thing or not.
