Exit Through the Gift Shop Documentary Review: Exit Through The Gift Shop

Funny, fascinating, and nearly impossible to categorize, Exit Through The Gift Shop is one of the best documentaries in years. The documentary focuses on a jovial French filmmaker named Theirry Guetta and his transformation into street artist “Mr Brainwash”. The documentary was made by a hipster street artist named Banksy. Banksy came to my attention after doing an extremely dark opening for The Simpsons involving sweatshops used to produce the very Simpsons products that have made the producers very rich. Banksy appears in the documentary, voice distorted, his face hidden in shadow, and wearing a hoodie. Many critics and audience members have questioned if the documentary is even real. Is it a fake or somewhere in between reality and fiction? That is up to viewers to decide. Exit Through The Gift Shop is available right now to stream online for Netflix members, I highly recommend you do so.

Exit Through The Gift Shop is about a French filmmaker named Theirry Guetta who decides to start filming street artists and tries to track down Banksy himself. After meeting Banksy and becoming “inspired” by his work, Guetta dubs himself “Mr Brainwash” and holds an art show for hipster art world fans. This is where it all gets fuzzy and surreal for the viewers. Is Banksy behind the rise of Mr Brainwash? Is he making a point about the rich hipsters who buy art and have no taste? Viewers should watch and decide for themselves but one thing is for certain, Exit Through The Gift Shop is one of the best documentaries in years and a must-see. It’s brash, funny, and entertaining as Hell, even if its proven to be nothing more than the most elaborate episode of Punk’d of all time.
