Today, we have Yosef as our featured cosplayer. Yasef caught my attention as he dressed up as one of my favorite games character, Ghost from Modern Warfare 2. Little did I know he also dressed up as Wolverine. Below is our cosplay talk.
NS: How long have you been cosplaying?
Yosef: I have been cosplaying since 2007, so thats somewhat about 4 years if you include this year as well. I even sort of semi-cosplayed at my first convention. It was sort of a last minute thing, and I ended up wearing my black spider-man Halloween costume.
So now, which costume is better, the one for Halloween or for conventions?
Yosef: The ones for conventions, because I put a lot of effort into getting my costumes ready for conventions, and the big cons usually last more than 2 days, Halloween lasts only 1.
NS: Do you cosplay as different characters?
Yosef: I cosplay as different characters, but its usually on yearly basis, for example one year I was this character and the next year I was different character, except this year I did multiple cosplays.
NS: Which one is your favorite cosplay character and why?
Yosef: My favorite Cosplay character so far is the one that I went as this and last year, and that is Wolverine. People say I resemble Hugh Jackman a lot when they see my costume. It made me happy, knowing that I was doing this cosplay right.
NS: What attracts you to cosplaying?
Yasef: The biggest thing that has attracted me to cosplaying was the other cosplayers. I saw how much fun they were having, how people would happily approach them to take a picture, seeing that kind of joy just made me want to be a part of that experiencing.
NS: Do you make your own costumes?
Yosef: See now this is a tough question. When you ask do i make my own costumes, in a way i do, but not with my hands. What I do is buy parts for my costume from different vendors and put them together in the end. I even buy parts when I least expect it, like when I go to the mall, and I see something that would look good for my costume. I get it and I pretty much always go to places like party city, for props or make-up.
NS: Do you go to forums to get ideas on your costumes?
Yosef: I get tons of ideas from forums, especially when I need to find parts for my costumes. A good example is my Ghost costume from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I wouldn’t have known how to get half of the stuff I was wearing if it wasn’t for the forums. They even gave me ideas on how to make certain pieces for my costume.
NS: Which has been your favorite convention and why?
Yosef: My favorite convention is Anime Expo because it is the biggest con I have been to. You get to meet big stars from Japan and America. The events and exhibit halls are always packed with fun booths and game shows like Funimation and Bandai. My first year at Anime Expo was 2007 and everyone was saying that year was a horrible year, which is true because I did stand in line for over 2 hours to get my badge, but other than that, it was my most memorable year.
NS: What’s your favorite moment from cosplaying?
Yosef: My favorite moment of cosplaying, actually took place this year. Me and my cousin, who was also cosplaying were in line to see the Chibi masquerade. But instead of seeing it, one of the people in charge of the event asked us if we could go on stage because she loved our costumes. Of course we accepted, and we had a lot of fun doing it. The feeling of being noticed and complimented felt really good.
NS: What’s the weirdest?
Yosef: Hmm, I haven’t had a lot of weird moments when cosplaying. The weirdest I can think of, took place at Anime Expo 2007. I was cosplaying Harima Kenji from School Rumble, and the cast of Anime TV had a booth in the exhibit hall. They were having a cosplay runway contest, and I signed up, when it was my turn to go on stage, the recognized my character right away, I was a little surprised at the time, because I’ve been watching there show and I haven’t seen them talk about School Rumble. To get to the point, when they released there episode on Anime Expo 2007, they were reviewing School Rumble. So after watching that it made sense on why they instantly recognized my cosplay.
NS: What’s one tip you can give to people that want to cosplay?
Yosef: Well I don’t know if this will apply to everyone, but make sure your costumes have a lot of ventilation. I’m serious, it gets so ridiculously hot at those cons and there have been multiple cases where I almost fainted. Also make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
NS: Besides cosplaying, what else are you into?
Yosef: I consider myself an Otaku, and like all otakus, I love reading manga, watching anime, and playing video games. My biggest interest is making AMVs, Ive been making them before I knew the term AMV, lol. If you want to check them out, Just search up Ysef200 on youtube.
End Of Interview
I want to thank Yosef for the detailed interview. Who knows what he’ll dress up next but I’m sure it’s going to be awesome!
