This is an older Comic from 2008. But, the cover art spoke to me, so I picked it up.
No, this isn’t about nerds. The premise; Dragons live amongst New Yorkers in the Great Depression era, the 1930s. The first issue is very captivating; the first pages were about a boy and his family enjoying the beach. Until, the father decides to go for a walk to “have a smoke.” The boy should have stayed, but he followed; and what happens next is the beginning of the little boy’s journey about the discovery of the world around him, and himself.
Besides the dragons, there are other mysterious creatures in the story; such as the guy his father used to work for. Who is this guy?; does he care about the boy, or merely pretending?
The art is outstanding; Max Fiumara did a great job at recreating NYC in the 30s. Reminds me of Godfather 2, when young Corleone lived in the slums, doing what he could to provide for his family. The art is very dynamic, and fun to look at. The dragons are fierce, and menacing, Fiumara makes them come to life; it reminds me of McFarlane’s “Dragons” toy line. Of course, this is Image Comics, so maybe that’s where the idea came from. The coloring is nice; it looks flat and dull, which I prefer over the glossy look.
McFarlane’s Dragons
Overall, an entertaining read. The story was better in the first half, but it still sticks. It’s not as original as I’d hope for but the art will keep you interested.
