I felt like reading something different; a little less fantasy,  so I picked this one up. Although, John McClane is a superhero, but without powers and more of a cowboy than Batman. He is always vulnerable, or so we think. As a fan of the original movie, I figured this was worth a look.

As you can probably guess, Year One is based on John’s early years in the force. The backdrop is NY, and McClane is out to catch some bad guys. In this issue, it involves a blackmail and a bank robbery. There’s also a twist in the end that ties to the movie, but doesn’t seem to make sense.

The art of Bruce Willis as McClane is spot on. It’s Bruce with longer hair, and 50 lbs. lighter. But, because of the writing; his attitude and mannerisms are a little off. As I read the dialogue, McClane’s voice takes over my head, but it just doesn’t seem to connect. In short, I cannot imagine McClane using these words. I understand that this is comics, and sometimes, things need to be explained through words; as opposed to film. But, McClane here is too much below waters; while in the movies, he’s always above it.

This should give you an idea of the art.

Overall, it’s an okay read, the art is good. But, the dialogue for McClane seems miscalibrated. If you are a Die Hard fan, this is still worth your time, just don’t expect it to be as great as the original movie. Remember, this review is only based on one issue. Once, I get a hold of the novel, I’m going to try to read the whole thing; hopefully, i won’t regret it.
