Beatiful Art Cover

The second part of the Shrapnel series, Hubris is somewhat of a disappointment. I say somewhat, because it still delivers on character development, great atmosphere, and amazing art. But, it falls short.

I don’t like spoiling stories but the story revolves around Vijaya “Sam” Narayan who became an iconic leader for the people of Mars. In short, it is a futuristic Sci-fi story with spaceships and mech-robots. Looking at the cover, I expected some crazy action, however, I was mildly disappointed. The story is thick, which for the most part is very entertaining. But, sometimes, the story gets too deep and it distracts from the flow of the book. Oftentimes, I can’t help but think “let’s get to the point!”

The art is amazing, it feels a little like water color, but digitally rendered. The colors blend well with stark contrasts against each other. The characters look good, but sometimes, they look too similar. The atmosphere that the artists created are just wonderful. I’d have to be honest and say that the artwork entertained me far more than the story.

Overall, it’s a good read. Although, it felt tedious at times. It’s like a movie with too much talking, and not enough action. But, this doesn’t mean it’s is a bad series, my expectation was just different.
